Pool Fencing Regulations

It is important for pool owners to take into account government and local council laws and regulations when installing pool fencing. Child safety around your pool is of primary concern, and for this reason Aqua Vista Glass recommends that you contact your relevant local council to make sure you know what your responsibilities are as a pool owner.

One of the additional benefits of choosing to use glass pool fencing is that, while glass fencing is extremely tough, it is also a difficult material to climb and doesn’t have the “gaps” between palings that more traditional fencing can be prone to.

You should also be aware that as a pool owner you are responsible not just for the installation of an appropriate pool fence, but also for the ongoing maintenance of your pool fence. For this reason it is vital to choose a high quality pool fencing product and to ensure that a good job is done on the installation.

Note that different regulations apply to pool fences depending on when the pool was built, and copies of these regulations can be downloaded from the Queensland government’s website. If you are not sure when your pool was installed, your local council may have a record, particularly when plans for the pool were submitted to council. For information on pool fencing laws in Queensland, please visit the Queensland government website, www.poolfencing.qld.gov.au

For further specific information about pool fencing requirements, contact your local council or a private building certifier. Contact Standards Australia (www.standards.org.au) for copies of relevant Australian Standards.

Pool fence inspection and certification

If your swimming pool is new, then the building certifier who approved the construction application must inspect and certify your pool fence before the pool is filled. A building certifier can be a private building certifier or a council building certifier. If you are building a new fence for an existing swimming pool that was originally approved by local council, then the new fence must be inspected and certified by the local council.
